How to Root Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 Jelly Bean 4.1.2

The latest official firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 XWLSD has been available for the past few weeks now and folks have been requesting through my YouTube Channel that I create a video on how to root the Jelly Bean firmware. So here it is:

Rooting the Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 is similar to flashing a new firmware through Odin. However, this time we’ll be flashing a small Kernel file called Siyah. Siyah is a well known custom kernel for the Samsung Galaxy S2 which provides root access to your device. Some Samsung Galaxy S2 owners have experienced a battery life improvement with the Siyah Kernel.

How to Guide

  1. Make sure you have Samsung Kies and Odin 3.07 (You can still use the older 1.85 version) installed.
  2. Download the Siyah Kernel S2-v6.0beta5 TAR file
  3. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S2 and go to Download Mode by pressing Volume Down + Menu Button + Power Button at the same time.
  4. Once in Download Mode, connect your Micro-USB to your computer and load up Odin 3.07.
  5. Select PDA and find the Siyah Kernel S2-v6.0beta5 TAR file on your computer.
  6. Click Start and give it a few seconds to flash your new custom Kernel.
  7. The Phone will automatically be restarted. You will notice a Yellow Triangle and a new bootup sequence. To double check if your device has been rooted look for the CWM and SuperSU apps installed.
  8. That’s it! Welcome to the Rooted World.

If you have any queries, questions or ran through any problems during the flashing process feel free to ask them below. I’ll be happy to help you out.

Will this unlock my device by any chance? I have a carrier network GT I9100 which was unlocked but after installing 4.1.2 XWLSD It got blocked again so I had to take it to a shop. They tried to root it and failed so I’ve got ICS again which is rooted and unlocked. Will this root process work for me? Opinions

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

This will definitely root your phone and perhaps you can install an Unlock App. Give it a shot mate :)

  • Jayanth

    Hey there jose.
I have an issue with my phone.
I’ve been facing problems with my phone as follows.
    1) Once I plug-in the charger and I remove it after the battery is full, The ” Charging ” It’s stuck back there. So I looked for some solutions online and I found one..” Firmware Corrupted ” re-installing may help.
So I changed it to 4.1.2 from 4.0.4 and that dint help at all.
Lately I’ve new issues on my phone USB isn’t detected.
    (After 4.1.2)
    Hoping a solution from you
    Thank you.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Jayanth! It might be a hardware issue. Perhaps the battery module is not communicating well with the main system board of the Galaxy S2.

Before bringing it to the service center try doing a full discharge by draining the battery completely to the point where you can’t turn on the phone. Once it’s fully drained (it should be off), charge it for a few hours and disconnect it once done.

If that doesn’t fix your phone, I suggest you bring it to an authorized Samsung service center (if it’s still under warranty) and flash it back to ICS if the Jelly Bean Firmware hasn’t been released in your country officially :) Let me know how it goes.

  • mike

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Samsung has rolled out a firmware update for the international Galaxy S2 I9100; ZSLSE Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware for users. The firmware update brings bug fixes to the handset. While this update is available via KIES and it is recommended that you get it from there. If for some reason, you cannot access the official update or would like not to wait and get it on your phone right now, here is a guide How to root samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 to ZSLSE Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Great Guide. Thanks for sharing :)

  • Alex

Does it allow to do overcloking?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I believe some Apps can do that, however, your Galaxy S2 might overheat. Expect that to happen.

  • mohan

i upgraded my phon as mentioned above procedure , it caame pass and restarted too but frozen with SAMSUNG GALAXY SII screen , i tried to go for recovery mode as u sugested (volume up+home+power) , but i m not able to obtain recovery mode , help me pls…

Hi there, I currently have android 4.0.4 and want to install JB 4.1.2 (xwlsj) however do i need to follow these instructions to root my S2 first

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Chris. You don’t nee to root your phone if you wish to update to JB 4.1.2 XWLSJ :) Let me know if you run into any issues :)

  • sean

hey jose! ahm when i download the siyah and extracted it, i only get the zimage and not the .tar file, am i doing it wrong or is there any thing i can do to make it work? thanks mate

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Sean. Don’t extract the file ;) The file is already .tar :)

      • Sean

when i open the cwm it says “this version of cwm manager should be used with CF-root v5.0 or newer. it appears you are running a different kernel. various features have been disabled.” what should i do? should i leave it like that? sorry newbie here.. thanks again

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Which version of Siyah did you download and which firmware build are you using? XWLSJ or XWLSD?

          • sean

            Siyah-s2-v6.0b5+

            Xwlsj

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

That’s strange. You can always access CWM Manager via Recovery Mode – Volume UP + Home Button + Power Button for 10 seconds. :) That’s the recommended way.

          • Sean

should i leave it like that?

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yes, just leave it as it is. I suggest CWM Recovery instead of using the App ;)

  • Francis

    Hi Jose,

I’ve recently upgraded to JB 4.1.2 official firmware. but I want to use custom roms such as CyanogenMod, aokp,… so do i need to root with this Siyah Kernel before using custom roms?
    thanks,
    Francis

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

That’s correct. Download and flash this http://www.gokhanmoral.com/?p=1796

      • Francis

        thanks Jose
        I’ll do that

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Good luck :) Let me know how it goes.

          • Francis

yeah, I’ll do that. and one more thing.. can i install CM 10.1 and JB 4.2.1 after rooting S2 with this Siyah Kernel?

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yes, you can very much install CM 10.1 I believe their latest nightly build includes JB 4.2.2 ;) Check out this guide – http://www.wiredmash.com/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100/

          • Francis

            yes, thanks Jose….

so basically, when I install CM10.1 with JB 4.2.2, I will lose all my apps that I’m having it in my S2, isn’t it? or can i backup my apps now and restore it after installing CM 10.1 and JB 4.2.2?
thanks for the guide by the way….. :)

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Why don’t you backup your App Data and Settings with your Google Account so that when you set up CM10.1 on your device everything will automatically download via the Play Store?

Or you can always use a third party backup app. ;)

  • tair

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

That’s the big issue. This guide is for Jelly Bean. Nevertheless, please see my reply above. :) I am here to help out.

          • Litesh

            hey everything is fine now
            i installed JB n rooted it :)
now m gonna install some custom roms :) ty for tutorial

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

You’re not supposed to use the Siyah Kernel S2-V6.0beta5 on ICS. This guide is intended for Jelly Bean, thus, your phone not working. I suggest you follow this guide – http://www.wiredmash.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100/

And reroot your phone with the above Kernel (CF Root). Let me know how it goes.

  • feras

Man simple question im having Samsung drives and im flasing all roms without kies and its needed to turn off kies before flashing so what download kies or without it please respond as sooner as u could

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Feras. I highly recommend you have Samsung Kies installed on your computer for driver’s sake. When you root or flash a new firmware via Odin, Samsung Kies should not be running in the background. Moreover, there is no need to have Kies installed on your Galaxy S2 too.

  • seleem

Hi Baz. Was your Galaxy S2 on Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean? You can try going into Recovery Mode by switching off your phone. Once off press Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button for 10 seconds. Once in Recovery Mode to a Wipe Partition and Wipe Cache.

Hi Jose, I have experienced very bad battery drain when I upgraded to XWLSN a few days ago, will installing this siyah kernel help?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi WillemDev. Can you tell me more about your battery drain issue? How many hours were you getting?

You can try doing a factory reset or you can boot into Recovery Mode (Turn off your phone and press Volume UP + Home Button + Power button for 10 seconds) and do a Wipe Partition and Wipe Cache.

In regards to your question, yes the Siyah Kernel might be able to improve your battery life :) Let me know how it goes.

  • Guest

Wow thanks for your quick reply! A 100% charge doesn’t last longer than 8 hours on idle only (no usage), I did wipe the partition and cache. removed the battery for awhile and charged while phone off.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I can last for around 14 hours on idle. Are you sure you don’t have any background apps eating your battery life? Where did you buy your GT-i9100 from?

You can try the Siyah Kernel to if battery life improves :) Let me know how it goes.

      • WillemDev

gud pm sir jose what is the difference between I9100XWLSN_NeatROM_Lite_v4.6.1 and FULL NeatROM are they the same? can i use them both in my GT-I9100 galaxy s2? which is a better choice?

after installing I9100XWLSN_NeatROM_Lite_v4.6.1 it worked perfectly.but when i try to reformat the usb storage, and checked my old files which were supposedly deleted are still there. I also tried doing the recovery mode, still having the same result. As I observed, upon rooting, I can’t able to reformat anymore.

Do you have any idea regarding my concern? thanks.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Christopher. That’s quite strange when it comes to formatting your USB Storage. Perhaps it’s a bug with the ROM itself. Nevertheless, the difference between NeatROM Lite and the Full NeatROM version are the included Samsung Apps. If you wish to have those bloated Samsung Apps you can go ahead and download the Full NeatROM ;)

Instead of the XWLSN, is it possible to pick any of the May ones? Like the UK/Ireland version?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hey there. I actually downloaded the XWLSS UK/Ireland Build and I would be using it for my installation guide this week. :) Stay tuned for that mate!

  • akb

Wanted to root phone due to internal storage getting low message.
What’s the next step? reflash with XWLSD ?

All went OK until reboot. Now phone locks on yellow triangle at reboot.
    XWLSD 4.1.2
Phone will go into download mode but not into recovery mode.
Phone was running out of internal storage hence want to root to delete used space. Had around 75MB left and decreasing.
    What next? Reflashing with XWLSD?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Why don’t you flash one of the latest firmware versions, XWLSN – http://www.wiredmash.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-android-4-1-2-xwlsn-firmware-april-2013/

And if you’re a little bit more patient you can wait for my latest firmware XWLSS Installation Guide which will be posted in a few hours. :)

      • Peterb

Thanks for that Jose. Successfully reflashed with XWLSD then factory reset which clear my device storage issues. May try the latest firmware as you suggest.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I suggest you do indeed try the latest XWLSS Firmware. There are some battery issues with regards to the XWLSD Firmware.

Is the yellow triangle warning sign on the boot normal sir?

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

    Hey,so I downloaded the Siyah Kernel,but when I extract it I get zImage.Why don’t I get tar?

    • chris badloe

OMFG,it worked,DO NOT EXTRACT THE KERNEL FILE YOU DOWNLOAD!just add it via Odin

      • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Glad you figured it out Chris :)

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hey Chris. You’re not supposed to extract the file again ;) Flash the file you downloaded via Odin.

    Hi!

When i try to root my S2 with siyah kernel, i get failed error in my odin(all the files were downloaded from your link itself)

I’m scared to try to root it again, pls help!

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hey Ashu. Try changing your micro-usb cable :)

      • Ashu

I did, again same problem. I highly doubt its a Micro-USB cable’s fault. Coz if it was, then my phone wouldn’t have been recognized in the 1st place, Just my thought. Anyways i did change my USB cable, still same error. Like it takes 6-7mins after that it gives failed error message

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

          Try downloading Odin 1.85 ;)

  • yanal92

is there anyway i could remove the yellow triangle ?? its annoying..

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Yanal. There was a way to do on previous versions of Android such as Ice Cream Sandwich, however, the app called Triangle Away doesn’t support Jelly Bean quite yet.

On another note, there’s a certain USB Jig that you can purchase from a computer store which can remove the triangle. :)

Link to the kernel Siyah is dead. Got a 404 when selecting the TAP download. Youve got any idea what i can do now?

I tried to root with Siyah Kernel S2-v6.0beta5 TAR file and my phone became brick-my phone isnt working anymore. I made backup with kies on my Desktop. How can i restore my phone?

Thank you very much in advance.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Boris. 4.0.3 is Ice Cream Sandwich ;) Nonetheless, don’t worry. You got to flash the CF Root File which is meant for Ice Cream Sandwich. You can find the guide here – http://www.wiredmash.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100/

On another note, I suggest updating your phone to the latest Jelly Bean Firmware via Samsung Kies :) Once you update your phone, you’ll have to root again, however, this time you’ll have to use the Siyah Kernel :)

  • Lucian

Will this work on my Galaxy S2 I9100P, 4.1.2 xxlsq?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yep. You will just lose NFC ;)

  • OverSeez

I asked it on Youtube but do i have to reset my phone before rooting it ?
Will i keep my applications or will my phone be reset ?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yep, and I just answered your comment a minute ago too ;) Anyway, nope. Make sure you’re running on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 prior to rooting. Good luck!

  • Corey

Hello, when i try to download the Siyah it downloads zipped? Is this meant to happen?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

It’s not zipped ;) It’s actually a .TAR file. Just use that file to flash it via Odin :)

  • Supertramp

    Will it work on I9100XWLST?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yep :) Enjoy the rooting world.

  • Franze

Can i install the siyah kernel? As i want to flash the SuperNexus ROM that i saw on your tutorial. My CWM at the moment is PhilZ that i got from rooting my phone.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

You’re good to go. It’s the Siyah Kernel which doesn’t work with the SuperNexus. :)

    • Nikolaj Lin

Previously used app when I had root works, but not new apps I download, they will just crash and say I need root.

      • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Nikolaj. Try re flashing the Siyah Kernel. Let me know how it goes :)

        • Nikolaj Lin

when i flash the kernel it stoppes at zimage
    what should i do ?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I hope you didn’t double extract the file. Just flash the TAR file you downloaded via Odin. There’s no need for you to extract it.

      • Muhammad Kaloti

        i didnt
i just did like it says in the video
it reaches the zImage and it stays the same

        • Muhammad Kaloti

          here

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Try changing your micro-usb cable. If that doesn’t work try Odin 1.85

            rooted successfully ;)

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Awesome Muhammad. Two thumbs up :)

  • cinval

I installed the Siyah kernel back in April/May and have been very happy with the results. What I wonder is whether the device will auto update to 4.2.2 if/when it becomes available, or will there perhaps be an Odin installable update?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Cinval. Unfortunately, Samsung will not be updating their firmware to 4.2.2 for the Samsung Galaxy S2. The latest version is tagged at 4.1.2 If you wish to play around with Custom ROMs with 4.2.2 you can very well do so, however, if you want to have a stable experience stick to the Stock Samsung Firmware :)

      • cinval

Hei Jose and thanks for your reply. It was a Sammobile page http://goo.gl/uoxQU which hinted at the GS2 stopping at 4.2.2, which triggered my question, but I am more than happy to continue with 4.1.2 :)

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Any plans in getting a new phone? Perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the iPhone 5S (Coming out this September)?

          • cinval

Yes, but I already have an iPhone 4, an SG Nexus, and a Nokia 808 as well as the GS2 ;) I have my eyes on the Lumia 1020 from the camera point of view, but WP8 puts me off.. so I might just wait & see what the next Nexus has to offer. (5S? No thanks ;)

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I have been using the HTC 8X for the past few months now and it’s not worth getting a Windows Phone 8 at the moment despite the incredibly awesome camera on the Nokia Lumia 1020. It’s the Apps which drive the platform.

hi there.. :) i just successfully rooted my galaxy S2 today w/ build # i9100XWLSD running on JB 4.1.2 .. i followed your instructions on your video using odin and siyah v6 b5 kernel… and let me say,,, Thank you… :)
    my prob now is,,
    1. do you have tutorial on how to use STWEAKS for better battery performance? what settings do you recommend?
    2. what is the CWM for? and how to use it? :D
    3. and what’s the function of SUPERSU? :)
    4. now that my phone is rooted,, what apps you can recommend that i must download? :)
    5. lasty, what’s the best rom you can recommend for me? because right now i’m still using my stock ROM..
sorry for the newbie questions… i just want to make sure that i’m doing the right thing so i can avoid bricking my phone… hope you can help me out JOSE… :) or anyone who reads this.. THANK YOU in advance… Godbless… :)

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I sent you a reply to your email. Anyhow, here’s a copy to the questions above:

      1. Sadly, not at the moment. Perhaps in the near future. I don’t really recommend playing around with STweaks or altering your CPU or GPU voltage. It’s dangerous and at times it might damage your phone in the long run.

      2. Clock Work Mod. You can use it in Recovery Mode. Turn off your phone. Press Volume UP + Home Button + Power Button for 10 seconds until you get booted into Recovery Mode. That’s the place where you would usually install ROMs at.

      3. SUPERSU grants permissions to Apps requiring Root Access

      4. Try Titanium Backup. Heard a lot of positive things about it.

      5. Cyanogenmod 10.2. I’ll be coming out an install guide within the day so stay tuned for that.

  • vicky29789

hey man…thanx for the video.now my question is will this procedure u showed in video will remove or wipe my data or not ? means if i do not take backup and root siyah kernel then will i loose my data( all apps and msgs nd contacts)?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

As long as you follow all instructions and you’re rooting it on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), all should be well. It’s always good to do a backup too. Back up your contacts and list of apps via your Google Account.

    Further please clarify.
    1. If I do this, whether the warranty will become void ?
    2. In case after rooting, If I want to go back to original kernel, how to do it ?

    Thanks in advance.
    Govind, India

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

      Yes, you can root it.

      1. Yes, it will be void.

      2. Just flash your country’s firmware – http://www.sammobile.com/firmware or you can always download the XWLSS Firmware – http://www.wiredmash.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-jelly-bean-xwlss-firmware-may-2013/

      • Govindaraj K

          Great to hear that! :)

          • Govindaraj K

Just now I noticed. I am unable to enable Wi-Fi. Why I press Wi-Fi, it shows “Turning on…” That is it. What needs to be done.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yep. Have you tried checking Settings > Wi-Fi

          • Govindaraj K

Yes. Unable to turn on itself. Before rooting, it was working perfectly alright.

      • Govindaraj K

I have already rooted my device.
In future (if needed), if I flash with country’s firmware / XWLSS firmware as you mentioned, whether the warranty becomes valid.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Well, the technicians would know you have rooted your device as there’s a binary count, however, you can get a USB Jig which you plug into the S2 and it resets itself to zero. ;)

          • Govindaraj K

Now i have tried to install Root Call Block. It says “Out of Space. RCB Could not be installed. Free up some space and try again.

            As per Titanium backup
System ROM 528 MB (8.19kB Free)
Internal 2.11 GB (1.84 GB Free)
Media 12.3 GB (12.1 GB Free)
Ext SD Card 15.9 GB (8.41 GB Free)

Most of the applications I installed in SD Card.
Apart from stock aps I installed only titanium backup in ROM.
            1. How to free ROM
            2. Whether S2 ROM 512 MB or 1GB
            3. Whether S2 Intneral SD is 16 GB or 12.3 GB
Your suggestion and solution will highly be appreciated.
