PLDT myDSL – Time for an Upgrade

We live in an era where the rate of technology continues to improve and progress with the number of innovations and discoveries found. I have been using PLDT myDSL ever since I moved here back in 2005. The internet connection has been fast and stable except for a few outages which last for a few days, one being a network upgrade and one due to a massive Earthquake in Asia. Other than that, things have been rather smooth with PLDT.

During the past 8 years I have only experienced two internet upgrades – 1.5Mbps to 2Mbps and 2Mbps to 3Mbps. The unlimited monthly plan is about PHP 1995 ($50) which compared to other countries, Malta and the USA, is rather expensive. One can avail of a 15Mbps connection at PHP 863 ($22) with Melita in Malta and up to 25Mbps on Comcast at around PHP 2000 ($50) a month.

Globe DSL and Skycable both offer similar plans and packages, however, Skycable is now offering consumable packages which has a higher download speed of 5Mbps and 10Mbps both at similar price points.

I think it’s time for PLDT to finally upgrade their internet broadband service which would be slightly comparable to other countries. We have been cited as the next “Asian Tiger” economy, right? I guess, it’s time to upgrade our telecommunication infrastructure too.

Internet - Stock.xching

Internet – Stock.xching

A slight speed bump to 5Mbps for PHP 1995 ($50) and up to 2.5Mbps for their lowest plan, PHP 999 ($25). That might not be at par with other countries, however, it’s a start.

PLDT seems to be the leader in in broadband internet in the Philippines and has already started rolling out their Fiber plans across the nation. Sadly, it’s only available within the immediate vicinity of the servers here in Cebu. And it costs around PHP 3500 ($88) just for 8Mbps. Now that’s a hefty price tag.

PLDT can set a new standard by boosting their broadband speeds which will force competitors to follow suit.

Are you a PLDT myDSL subscriber? Have you had issues with PLDT and their broadband service? Have you tried Skycable?

  • http://twitter.com/PLDTHome PLDT HOME

We appreciate the feedback and we’ll do our best to provide the strongest connections in the Philippines.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Quite a generic statement. ;) Any news if you’re planning to upgrade your speeds? Perhaps a speed boost for Plan 999 and Plan 1995, 2Mbps and 5Mbps respectively.

  • alex

I am PLDT myDSL 1.5mbps subscriber, my internet connection now is a little bit crappy… I can’t play online games like DOTA, crossfire and RAN like before coz my connection is not stable…

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Alex. I believe the 1.5Mbps plan should have been upgraded to 2Mbps. What plan are you on? Are you on Plan 1995? Try doing a speedtest at http://www.speedtest.net and post your results after.

  • MyBro Community

SmartBro recently came up with a fair usage policy on its consumers. Their ‘used to be “UNLIMITED internet”‘ is now “LIMITED.” They are now capping internet speeds of a user to 200kbps only after using up 15GB of downloads per month. This policy was never broadcasted to its consumers, it was only shown in their website.

This move will make consumers transfer their ISPs to PLDTdsl or even PLDT fibr, which both costs more. and to think of it, after a user transfers, PLDT still can change things. They may have a fair usage policy soon too. This things are just too crappy because users don’t get the worth of what they signed for. We are hoping that PLDT and SmartBro trash that fair usage policy because first and foremost, it isn’t FAIR.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi There. You can actually complain about this to the NTC and DTI as that’s clearly illegal. The company should INFORM all users that they are adjusting their policy agreement. They could have sent out an email or even add info about the policy change in their billing statement.

      When did this happen?

      • MyBro Community

I think they implemented this policy on the last week of April 2013. There are no announcements on billing statements. And even if a user calls their hotline, the CSRs don’t know how big is the download limit. that’s why it’s just too crappy…

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

That’s pathetic. We all know PLDT and SMART’s Customer Service. It’s horrible! Moreover, the CSRs are there just to report our issues. They aren’t even aware if there is an internet problem in an error. Pretty useless.

  • Truth

Globe already one upped PLDT in all DSL Plan offerings. From 1099 bundle at 1mbps to 2299 bundle at 5mbps they also added unlimited calls to all Globe and TM Mobile Subs. Granted they have daily capping allowances (3GB for plan 1099 and 10GB for 2299) They still strived to make speeds faster at a minimal compromise (only torrent peeps will be irked by this). PLDT is really lagging behind.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Interesting. Nevertheless, I am not a fan of a capped internet connection. I rather have an unlimited connection, however, at slower speeds.

      • Truth

Well, I’ll restate it, it’s a daily cap and you can get your speeds back the very next day. There’s a trick where you restart your modem and you get back your subscribed speed again or something like that. Point is, at least Globe is doing something about the sad state of internet here.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Interesting. What are your thoughts on SkyCable’s offerings?

          • Truth

Well, the problem with SkyBroadband on the ptherhand is the lack of real outside connections. Unlike PLDT who has invested much in connecting their infra to many undersea cables in Asia. That may be the culprit why they’re expensive.

SkyBroadband’s promise is only good within their networks most of the time. The other downer being a Cable Broadband provider is the fact that they do shared IP Infrastructure and shared bandwidth. I’d also like to remind you that they do transparent proxy that breaks some of the internet related services like DNS. They talk the talk but not walk the walk.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I understand. I used to have Cable Internet back in Malta in Europe and when peak hours come, the speeds go down the train, immensely! I am thinking of trying out SkyCable’s 15 day trial and putting up a review on WiredMash. What do you think?

          • Truth

Well, I must warn you that you may get a better experience during that 15-day trial. See if the service suits your needs before signing up.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

It will be a review of SkyCable’s service from the moment of signing up, the ease of the signup process and lastly the performance of their service.

          • Truth

Fair enough. Pricing wise, you’re also getting the same price to speed ratio for the all unlimited aspect. The 10mbps and 5mbps advantage plans have monthly capping of 15GB as per their website. 35GB for the pricier offerings. You said you’re not a fan of capping so, yeah. You mention you’re from the US, Since they use transparent proxies, you can’t use your own dns (like unblock-us) to unblock Netflix/Hulu/Pandora (assuming you use those) for watching/listening on SkyBroadband.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I am currently a PLDT DSL subscriber too. I am on Plan 1995 (3Mbps) and as you said it’s pretty stable and the unlimited bandwidth is great.

I never heard of UNLOCK-US. I’ll check it out :)

        • roseanne

          PLDT is unlimited!

  • Truth

One more thing, Unfortunately, DSL Infra here in PH (ADSL2+) can only go as far as 23mbps in theoretical bandwidth, Globe offers torque at 15mbps max on this type of tech. PLDT can also go as far as 20mbps if they’re willing but I bet they will settle for 15mbps too where fiber is not available. The reason why othe ISP around the world is faster and cheaper is because they employ cable Internet just like sky broadband. DSL is expensive but far more stable than any other legacy broadband fiber being the newer and better offering.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

The DSL Infrastructure still needs to be upgraded here in the Philippines. It lacks behind several SEA countries. I am currently connected to a public WiFi network at my 3 star hotel in Taipei, and I am getting speeds of 11Mbps down and 3Mbps up. Now that’s fast!

      • Truth

IKR. Globe has invested in VDSL aside from Fiber which offers upto 100mbps in ideal conditions but only 50mbps max in real world tests. Still good. PLDT is lagging behind because they are the market leader. Sooner or later no amount of “we have 4x more fiber” marketing ploy can keep people for jumping ship.

Too bad they are the only telco who have good/great connections to the U.S. (I get the same speed as my subscribed plan connecting to netflix as if I’m in the U.S.)

Coincidentally, the Taipei 3 star hotel is no match to the home cable broadband my sister has in HK. 40mbps for just 200HKD a month or about 1k pesos. or even 30mbps in a 3 star hotel in HK over wifi.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

However, Globe isn’t doing some well in terms of connectivity in the Cebu area. I don’t think the foundation is stable enough here in Cebu. Have you heard anything like that before?

In regards to the Taipei Hotel’s Wifi, well, it’s a certainly a large difference compared to me 3Mbps/0.6Mbps connection I get at home ;)

          • Truth

For Globe, I think you may wanna take a look at them again esp since they’re on the final front of modernizing their systems throughout the PH. Granted they only have 1/4 the number of fiber optic cabling around the PH compared to PLDT Group (Smart + Sun), they can hold their own here in Manila. Give them a shot, you may never know.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I won’t be changing my internet service provider anytime soon especially to Globe Lines in Cebu. The infrastructure isn’t up to par with Manila’s.

  • Why

Globe already offers these plans beating PLDT in every way…

INTERNET + LANDLINE + FREE WIFI ROUTER
    plan 1299php up to 2mbps
    plan 1599php up to 3mbps

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Globe has terrible service here in Cebu. Most folks use PLDT as it’s pretty stable and solid :) How’s Globe doing in your area?

    • Yves Philip Nicdao

YES. that is true… but unlike PLDT, globe is not unlimited. it has a cap per day. i heard it’s 3GB? is that true?

      • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Philip. I believe that’s correct. Globe has a daily bandwidth cap. One of the reasons why I don’t recommend Globe to heavy users.

    • Roman

Yes globe sucks, it’s not unlimited… don’t waste your money getting their services..

      • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Roman. Globe’s DSL connection here in Cebu is quite unreliable. I still recommend PLDT to anyone signing up for a new connection.

  • Rommel

I have just heard that PLDT has upgraded its myDSL plans with the plan 1995 now 5Mbps and plan 999 now 3Mbps.

I tried to verify if this is now implemented, and PLDT said that this update will be gradually be implemented everywhere soon. (They havent upgraded the speed here in Batangas…yet.)

    Cheers!

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Rommel. Definitely. I am currently on Plan 1995 and I was surprised a couple of weeks of ago when I did a Speed Test – it was 5Mbps. I wonder if PLDT read this article ;)

  • kimLJT

Btw po help me naman po to clarify my thoughts, both ba pldt myDSL plan na 1299 at 1995 walang capping or bandwidth limit? Kasi balak ko mag switch sana from canopy since canopy may capping grabeh talaga. Just need your opinion po regarding these 2 plans. TIA

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

That’s right. There’s no bandwidth limit. I am currently on Plan 1995 and it’s unlimited. I just hope PLDT keeps it that way.

      • kimLJT

Thank you for your immediate reply and I do appreciated it. Great to know that one.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

You’re welcome. :) Where are you located anyway?

          • kimLJT

            Mindanao here, Iligan City.

      • Paul Jenzen

Plan 1995 is it okay sa computer shop? 7 units..kakayahin ba? I am currently using business plan 3mbps 4.4k pesos per month ,,hindi na practical sa 7 units e.. thanks :)

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I think it should be enough for web browsing, however, I am not quite sure if it will be fast enough for internet gaming as a number of users will be sharing it.

  • Hirano

Ano po ba usually ang download speed kapag plan 1995(5mbps)?

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

      Around 500KB/s – 600KB/s ;)

  • John

bro pwede papost nung speedtest mo? plan kasi ng family ko mag upgrade from 1299 to plan 1995
    thanks! novaliches area here

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi John. Sure. Here it is. Remember, I am located in Cebu so the ping is a little bit higher. I am sure it will be better in your area.

  • iammarielleelle

has anyone tried using pldt mydsl in talisay city, cebu? particularly in camella homes. I’ll be moving in there and i can’t use globe because their connection is very unstable. i need to use the internet for work.

from what i know, the previous owner already has pldt landline and internet, and they said it’s slow but i think they’re only subscribing to 512kbps.

i want to get the upgrade to 3mbps but i just want to make sure their service is more than good.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi There. PLDT should be fine in Talisay City, Cebu. I don’t think they’re many subscribers too in the area so you’ll be able to enjoy the bandwidth. If you still have doubts, you can ask the PLDT Office in Mabolo in regards to connectivity at Camella Homes.

  • Hirano

Di pa na upgrade dito sa Davao City. Nag upgrade ako last week from plan 1299 to plan 1995. 3mbps parin ang speed. Sana ma upgrade na rin dito haha

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Hirano. Have you tried filing a complaint at your local PLDT Office? I believe upgrade is still on-going.

      • Hirano

That’s what they said. Upgrade is by batch they said. I haven’t specifically asked them about the upgrade progress in Davao though.

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Wait until the end of August and if there isn’t any progress in regards to the upgrade, file a complaint ;) It doesn’t take that long to upgrade. It’s just a matter of changing a setting in the system.

          • Hirano

Yeah, they said the speed upgrade will be done on the end of august. I just hope my net will speed up by then so I won’t have to call them again.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Let’s hope so too. Right now, I am experiencing extremely slow speeds with PLDT. Let’s see how this will turn out.

          • MariusDejess

You seem to be happy with the contracted speed of pldt, that pldt delivers as per contract.

I am into plan 1299 and I get yes faithfully speed of 1 mbps.

There is a plan 1599 which gives 3 mbps, that means 300 pesos more every month for my internet access.

Question: Will pldt also faithfully deliver all the time 3 mbps as per contract?

Or it will be always giving excuses why not, though I am happy it is delivering as per contract 1 mbps on my actual contract of plan 1299.

            Please advise.

I had bad experience with Globe because it promises but delivery is often unsatisfactory, and the bundled landline most times does not work at all.

And troubleshooting is also most unsatisfactory; I have the impression that it tries to lure people to sign up and then neglect them afterwards, and still comes up with more attractive plans — and I find it at times really insincere, like instead of fixing the trouble with their bundled landline they surreptitiously sold me a new landline with a new cost added to my previous contracted cost of plan 1099, which new landline does not work as advertized: I can use it to call out to pldt but I cannot use pldt to call to it (but they are working to fix it, i.e., working forever to fix it but never finally succeeding).

No, all in all, I am not happy with my subscription to Globe internet service for all my 4 years of using their service, all the time paying up completely and faithfully every month.

Then they promise reward which they never deliver, and also when I asked for rebates for lack of service and lousy service, they also neglect to comply — although I understand that they also bind themselves to give rebates for missing service and/or interrupted or generally lousy service.

            Marius de Jess

  • Hirano

Anyone experiencing internet slowdowns(pldt dsl) these past few days? Grabe 3mbps plan ko pro 1mbps nlang natatanggap ko simula kahapon.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I am! I experienced it a few days ago and now it’s back again.

  • Clinton Cabillada

Grabe.. I am experiencing issues with my 3Mbps internet. Ano ba pldt one month na same issue pa rin. I have a good speed. I am getting 2.90 Mbps to 3Mbps but the connection keeps on dropping. Hahayz.. mag globe dsl nalang kaya ako.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Clinton. I am only getting 0.50Mbps out of my 5Mbps connection. Don’t transfer to Globe it’s even worst with them ;)

      • Clinton Cabillada

I am so disapointed with the connection.. it’s been horrible. Palaging na disconnect.. parang joke2 lang ang service. Previous package ko is 1299 bundle with 1Mbps. The internet issue started last july 16. I had tech visits, changed the modem, purchase a new router.. pero palagi pa rin na disconnect adsl light ng modem. Even I experienced issues with the internet, kakaupgrade ko lang last week to 3Mbps for 999 tapos 600 daw sa phone dahil hindi na bundle.. the internet speed was awesome for one night then the folowing day.. wala na.. back to the same issue. Sa ngayon, i am using my globe phone para maka internet. Wala pa action ang pldt sa issue ko. :(

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Looks like PLDT is having some issues right now with their servers. Have you tried following up your problem at your local PLDT office?

          • Clinton Cabillada

I will go there in the morning.. hope pldt office here in cebu is open during weekends

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

They should be on Saturdays. The internet is just too painfully slow at the moment.

  • Clinton Cabillada

Globe offers unlimited internet only plan for 999 pesos/month. Do you think that it has a cap usage data? Globe tattoo dsl website does not indicate such information unlike bundled and consumable plans na may cap usage per month.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Trust me. Don’t get Globe. It’s terrible here in Cebu! And no it’s not unlimited internet. There’s a daily cap of around 2GB if I am not mistaken.

    • Pio Ian Lumongsod

Actually, there is a 7GB data limit per day. Pero pag mag cap kana, 1GB ang nalang ang speed, which is ok parin. Dito sa Iligan, maganda ang ping, around 45-70.

      • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

7GB of Data Limit isn’t so bad, however, I am a heavy user so I wouldn’t be able to survive on that limit ;)

  • Hirano

My internet is still very unstable. It has already been a week. Maybe the storm has something to do with this? although i’m far from it.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Hirano. It has nothing to do with the storm. I had a terrible internet connection last week, however, things were fixed by Saturday evening. Have you tried calling PLDT DSL Technical Support?

      • Clinton Cabillada

I already went to the local office today. I am still experiencing unstable internet connection with PLDTmyDsl… hahayz

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

What did they say? Did you threaten of leaving PLDT?

          • Clinton Cabillada

I told them that we have been a loyal customer since 2003 and I am more patient enough to wait more than a month just to get this issue resolved since I still believe that PLDT delivers better service than any other service providers. Regarding my internet issue, the tech re-wired our connection and I am getting a speed of less than 512kbps when our speed should have been 3Mbps. I contacted the tech assigned in my area and he told me that we are all in this together and he have to update the new port or connection to 3Mbps on Monday. Hopefully this issue will be resolved..

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hope for the best Clinton. Let me know how it goes with your issue.

          • Clinton Cabillada

            Sure, will keep you posted

          • Clinton Cabillada

Here’s an update.. I have now a stable connection.. I almost have a perfect ping when I run it with cmd however I am not getting 3Mbps now as they reverted back the speed to 1.5Mbps. The techcian told me that PLDT consumers are experiencing issues with this double the speed promo that’s why they reverted back the speed to 1.5. I told the tech that PLDT is fooling customers since it is actually shown on the website that Excite plan is now up to 3Mbps. I receive this speed before the tech rewired our connection… now its back to 1.5Mbps. I felt like being lied by PLDT. The reason I upgrade the service because I though that I would be getting the 3Mbps connection. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Hi Clinton. You might have placed on an older network. I suggest you give PLDT a call again, this time escalate it to the point that you speak to a supervisor or someone with authority who can do something about it. Otherwise threaten them with a demand letter.

      • Hirano

My connection has already stabilized after 2 weeks lol. it now sits at 3-3.2mbps. Unfortunately, I still haven’t been boosted to 5mbps :(

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Have you tried escalating your complaint?

  • Hirano

There are rumors floating around that PLDT Mydsl would be implementing FUP(Fair Usage Policy) later this year. I hope this will not turn out true or else I would definitely terminate my dsl plan lol.

    • Clinton Cabillada

If they are going to implement this fair usage policy like Globe, then there’s nothing we can do. I am sure other service providers will follow. In my area, there’s no other choice.. it could only be PLDT or GLOBE DSL.

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I hope they won’t do that too. We’re already paying a hefty rate. Perhaps it would be acted on the lower tier plans.

      • Hirano

@Clinton Don’t forget Sky Broadband where I plan to transfer if ever PLDT implements FUP for real.
@Jose yeah, but it’s just a rumor so finger crossed lol

        • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

The problem with Sky Broadband is that don’t have the infrastructure compared to PLDT so the pings would be usually high.

          • Clinton Cabillada

The higher the ping boils down to unstable connection. Right? Coz it takes time for internet servers to communicate with each other.

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Yep. The higher the ping, the slower that bit gets sent between your computer and the server ;)

  • Arwin Margallo

Naku, dito samen sa Tagkawayan, Quezon myDsl plan 990 for 384 kbps. Local TelCo naki share lang naman sa PLDT

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

They have yet to upgrade Plan 990 to 1Mbps?

  • julson

plan ko sana kumuha ng ganito myDSL Plan 999 up to 3Mbps, totoo bang 999 lang babayaran tas 3mbps lagi ung net mo? pakisagot..gusto ko lang mag pldt..new lang po about connection

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

I believe they should have upgraded existing plans specifically Plan 999 which now clocked at 3Mbps.

  • blitz

Anyone from Batangas area na upgraded na speed Plan 1299 from 1mbps > 2mbps?

  • Clinton Cabillada

Pangit na talaga service ng pldt ngayon.. hahayz..

    • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

What’s the latest update from your end?

      • Clinton Cabillada

I am still experiencing unstable internet for 2 months since July 16 2013. I talked with supervisor on the phone and said that they are still working on it. Cguro 1 yr pa before it will be fixed. I am tired of calling customer service and my issue has been recurring. The account is about 10 years now at ngayong taon lang nagloko ang connection. Cguro they dont want to keep us as loyal customer. Final resolution is to disconnect the line permanently. :(

        • Victor

Do u hav extension phones connected sir? If you have u need to disconnect them. Thats how i solved my problem sir

          • Clinton Cabillada

No extension phones.. issue resolved. After 3~5 days I talked with an escal supervisor. They sent a special team to fix our line. Replace a brand new modem. Boom…. iy is fixed after 2 months..

          • http://www.wiredmash.com/ Jose Francisco Farrugia

Finally! That’s good news. At the moment, for the past few hours our connection has been quite slow. Looks like there’s a network issue in Cebu.

  • Vic

Called their support a hundred times they told me the speedboost of my interet will be applied automatically thru their system by d end of this year??? Why would they let me wait why cant they just adjust it manually?

    • Clinton Cabillada

I suggest that you request for a supervisor when you call the hotline

      • demon6937 .

should he really call the supervisor? it sounds impractical to me

  • Victor

here in the philippines internet services and gadgets are overpriced but not all…. i’m still using the pldt my dsl plan 990 here in cebu most of the time i’ve been experiencing slow connections from 384 kbps(which is my max speed) to 20-70 kbps… i only imagined ISP outside of the philippines which has cheaper plan than here but with great and stable service

I just got a 2 MBps plan today from PLDT …very disappointing. actual speed is only .33Mbps.
